Default Weird Spacing Between Letters in Word 2010

I have been copying legal transcripts from their pdf form to word. When I do I get weird spacing, for instance:

w a s a -- we w e r e at a s o c c e r g a m e , a n d so we w e r e w a t c h i n g t h e

soccer game.

MR. Small: Dr. Page, this is my specific q u e s t i o n : Did you or did you not discuss.

***********

When I view the formatting, I see dots between the letters that are spaced far apart. Can someone tell me how to get rid of them. I have pasted into Notepad, tried special pasting, tried pasting the text into gmail editor, and nothing will get rid of the wide spaces. Thanks for any assistance that can be given.
