How to create multilevel figure/table captions
Hi all. I am trying to write a complex document for work with multiple levels in it. I know how to create a multilevel document and how to label figures and tables using the "Add Chapter" function when creating a caption. My problem is that I can't seem to label some figures/tables using, for example, Heading 2 as the Chapter label and some figures/tables using Heading 3 as the chapter label. For example, my document has levels set up like so:
1 1.1 1.2 1.2.1 1.2.2 1.3 2 2.1 2.2 etc. I want to be able to label tables under section 1.1 as Table 1.1.1, Table 1.1.2, etc. And tables under section 1.2.1 as Table 1.2.1.1, Table 1.2.1.2, etc. However, whenever I switch from one level to the other, it changes all the captions for all tables/figures. And if there is no Heading 3, it reverts to the last Heading 3 it can find, even if it is in the wrong chapter. Any thoughts on how I can get around this issue? Thanks all! |

It's a complete headache to micromanage the graphics according to the headings above it. If you are going to do it, you will have a major problem (including with cross-references) should any headings change level.
If you want to insert captions this way, create each level as a building block entry and insert a new caption from those building blocks.

Thanks for the advice Guessed. I actually tried fooling around with creating Building Blocks, but couldn't seem to figure it out. How exactly do you create a Building Block such that the caption will incorporate it's level into the Table title? Perhaps I just don't know enough about Building Blocks (never created any myself for this kind of thing). I tried saving each section as a Building Block, then reinserting it into the document, but that didn't seem to work. Any additional help would be most appreciated, or perhaps a link to somewhere that explains this stuff for in greater detail.
Thanks again!! |

The Caption feature assumes that you want to include the number of a specific heading level with your caption. Trying to force anything else will be a nightmare to maintain.
You can use building blocks to insert captions, but the restarts will still be a challenge.
