How to mix character sizes without changing line spacing?

I'm formatting a manuscript and looking at using a large font size for the first letter. Works great except Word introduces a scaled line spacing below it, like below. How would I retain the line spacing of the normal type in the paragraph?

First, you may want to, instead, use a DropCap.

If that is not satisfactory, try setting your paragraph formatting for exact line spacing.

Thanks! I hadn't seen the Drop Cap option and will consider in the future. For this application, I'd like to get the my OP working.

I had tried selecting the first char, right-clicking, and changing the paragraph line spacing, but unfortunately it applied to the whole paragraph. So, the whole para changed but the first line was still proportionately the same.

First, line spacing is paragraph-level formatting.

Try exactly the size of your expanded character, in points.

Otherwise, you could use WordArt for your first letter. Word will mark the remainder as a spelling error unless it forms a complete word without that letter.

WordArt is also on the Insert tab. Note, WordArt is no longer part of your text. It is a graphic.

This is not the case with the other methods.
