using Word 2019. checked the paper width at 100% and found it off significantly. How do you calibrate the ruler to get better agreement between screen and represented distances?

Thanks, all!

The ruler and page widths are relevant to the printed page, not the displayed page.

How big a page appears on the screen depends on the size of the screen and the number of pixels being displayed. There is a massive difference in size between a 13'' laptop screen showing 1980 pixels wide or a 40" monitor showing 1980 pixels wide.

so, I think I understand. Drawing programs allow you to set the 8" as 8 actual inches when the magnification is set to 1. I assumed that WORD's 100% meant that the dimensions shown were to be considered accurate.

You are correct that you assumed incorrectly about Word.

I'm intrigued that there might be drawing packages that can do this. I would love to see it working on my two monitors of different physical sizes but same pixel count.
