![]() I created a New document and then created Heading 1-5 styles using Shauna Kelly's procedure. Then I copied the those 5 styles from the document to the Normal.dot template, named the document "Styles Worksheet" and closed Word (2000). As a check, I reopened "Styles Worksheet" and verified that my Heading 1-5 styles had not changed. I closed Word again. "Styles Worksheet" is shown below. Next, I opened a document that I had created some time ago and what to my surprise, Headings 1-5 did not change to what I had in Styles Worksheet. I then reapplied those styles but I did not see any change. What did I forget to do? Or do wrong? |

To copy Styles from one document to another or to a template when Styles of those names exist in the destination file, you should use the Organizer (Tools>Templates and Add-Ins>Organizer).
To update the Styles of a document for which they've been updated in its template, go to Tools>Templates and Add-Ins, then check the option to 'Automatically update document styles'.

If you use Paul's alternative method of checking the box to update styles, after you do that, go back and uncheck the box. What happens when I send my document to someone else? Will Word mess up my formatting? |

Thank you for your help with the links. (I noticed that some of the links within the linked-to pages gave me a 404 error, while the majority did not.)
Yes, I do want the heading styles in my Normal.dot. I'm retired and I want to keep all my personal documents looking the same, and 2) I'm retired - working with Word to keep my sanity... |
