Copy/paste - the same as you might do with any other file you wanted to place on the Desktop.

You could also right click the Template in its current location and opt to Send to > Desktop (create shortcut.

Double clicking this shortcut will open the original Template as a new Document.
Should you right click the shortcut and opt for New, it will also open a new Document.
If you opted for Open on the r/click, the actual Template opens and if any changes are made, they are in the original Template and not a copy of the original Template.

Double-clicking the shortcut will create a new document based on the original template. It will not open the template.

I strongly recommend keeping your templates in your templates folders and placing shortcuts elsewhere rather than intermixing templates and regular documents. They serve different purposes.

That's why I wrote "Double clicking this shortcut will open the original Template as a new Document"

Perhaps, in retrospect, I should have wrote "Double clicking this shortcut will open a new document based on the original Template"

Moonshine, I know that I get persnickety about jargon on forums. In part, I suppose it is because I'm a lawyer and the wrong word gives the wrong result in legal matters. In getting help for Word, only by searching using the exact terms are you likely to find good help. One does not open a new document based on the template, one creates a new document. You can't open a document that does not exist.

If the wrong terms are used, what you get is confusion, which is still better than losing a lawsuit.
