Default language French, font Japanese – how to correct/understand

Editing a docx I've been sent by a colleague … I open the Modify style panel for a heading, and see to my surprise that the description after Font: includes (Asian) Japanese. The document language is French.

questions:
a) what does this (Asian) Japanese attribute signify?
b) how can I get rid of it in this style definition?
