Thanks for your response Paul but there are no tabs set for the headings. The actual document displays OK it's just some of the headings in the TOC that are misaligned.
I did find a cure. By switching to outline view I could see that the heading numbering was showing on two lines, i.e. the heading line and the line below. I cured this by re-typing the heading in the space above the original one and changing the style of the original heading and line below to Normal before deleting it. Then when I updated the TOC the headings and page numbers were displaying correctly. Don't know why this should happen but hey ho, it worked.
