![]() Were the cross-references created via Word's cross-reference dialog box? If not, they are probably just typed, as plain text, and you won't be able to update them.

Hi Stefan,
Thank you for your response, all the cross-references created via proper cross-reference method only. I am attaching examples files for reference (File 1, File 2 & Combined file). Kindly please have a look and let us know if it is possible to have cross-reference numbers gets updated automatically as per the blue call-out boxes which i have kept in the combined version file. Thanks |

Cross-references always point to a particular location, defined by a hidden bookmark. Looking at an example in your file, I can tell that the hidden bookmark is called "_Ref528234056." That bookmark points to an item numbered "Exhibit 1."
Things may happen when you combine two separate files that both contain bookmarks. Typically, problems occur if bookmarks have the same name in two different files and those files are combined into one.
