Problem solved!
More by accident than design I went into WINWORD compatibility and ran the troubleshooter -- hey, bingo! -- everything seems to be back to normal. Apparently my Word programme had been superseded, and therefore my very recent documents could not be recognised. I'm so relieved! Now I can get back to work and some more documentation. Meanwhile, macrodot, thanks for your interest and assistance. johndot
