Default When multiple documents open, undo/redo in one document affects others?

I'm working on a couple of documents at once. It seems like they share the same undo/redo memory because when I undo enough stuff in one document in then switches my view to the other document and starts undoing stuff in that. Is that how it's mean to operate? Am I the crazy one?

Undo should apply to each document window separately.

Are you perhaps inadvertently pressing a keyboard shortcut which switches between different open windows (such as Alt+Tab)?

It's definitely Ctrl + Z. I can sometimes press it multiple times and it undoes stuff in one document and then when I press it again it switches focus to the other document and starts undoing stuff there. Ctrl + Y then does the reverse.

That's normal for Excel, but not for Word; I've never seen that behaviour in Word.
