Unhappy Table of Contents and Preserving Lists

I created a multilevel list(ex: 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc.). I want to make a Table of Contents where the "1." is Header 1, and "1.1" would be Header 2. However, as soon as I select the text in "1.1" and then click Header 2, the number is removed, and the item no longer "belongs" to the list. How do I maintain the integrity of the list while adding the headers for the Table of Contents?

Thanks!
Chezi

You need to tie the multilevel list numbering to a corresponing set of Styles. Typically, level 1 would be tied to the Style Heading 1, level 2 would be tied to the Style Heading 2, and so on. By default, a Table of Contents will automatically reference the Heading Styles.

For instructions on setting up heading numbering properly, see https://shaunakelly.com/word/numberi...g20072010.html (the article applies to Word 2007 and later).
