Setting margins by number of characters
I need to set a 36-character, one column margin but can't figure out how to do that. Also, I'm trying to turn on line numbering but can't get that to happen. I've gone into
"Line Numbering," ticked the box that says "Add line numbering" and "continuous" and clicked "Okay," but I'm not seeing them. Do I have to be in a particular view? I'm using Microsoft Office 365 on a PC, Windows 10. Thanks for your help. |

I'm completing an assignment for a course on indexing books. The criteria for the assignment say no more than 300 lines, with no more than 36 characters per line. I realize that the font would have an effect, but I'm not sure how that figures in. I just need to set the margins somehow so that I can see what the number of lines is.
Thanks for your help. |

Use a monospaced font such as Courier New and adjust the size of the font to give you 36 characters per line.
I believe that the margin settings shown will produce no more than 36 characters per line with Courier New 12 pt. font. This is on letter-size paper. |

Whoever specified those criteria either has no idea about proportional fonts or they're expecting you to use a fixed-width font. They also seem to be disregarding differences in word length. Universities and the like typically specify assignment lengths in terms of word count, not the number of lines or characters per line.

Regardless, Indices typically use proportional fonts and the number of characters that will fit on a line depend on all three of the type face, point size and characters actually used.
