Default Word changes font of some symbols (" for example) from Times New Roman to Helvetica as I type

Currently, when I type in Word my quotation marks " " are being changed to Helvetica 12-point font from Times New Roman (12-point as well) when I am typing and cannot be changed back. If I try to change them to Times New Roman several words after will also sometimes turn into Helvetica. Right now, it is only the quotation marks that are a problem - the program will type in Times New Roman, when I press the " button, it turns into Helvetica, and then when I resume typing it returns into Times New Roman. Any insight would be much appreciated.
