Word 2010 "Save As" has no folders
On my mother's laptop, Windows 7, Office 2010, (not sure, but I think it is the Professional Plus) when she chooses Save As, no folders show. If you click on the "Hide Folders/Browse Folders" button, all it does is lengthen the popup window and move the Author/Title/Manager and rest of the document information into a single file vertically. The folders do not show. I have tested my button, and for just a flash, I can see the screen she has, just before it changes to the folders. It's like the program is not processing the whole command to switch to folders. We have tried uninstalling Office, then re-installing it, but the problem persists. I have searched the forum as well as the Internet and cannot find a resolution to this. Does anyone have any ideas? Mother lives in NV and I live in OK, so it isn't like I can jump on her machine and try different things. She is 84 years old, but is sharp for her age. However, this makes it very difficult for her to save new documents. I will be at her house next month and hope we can resolve this. I appreciate any suggestions! |

Do you mean that she can't change from SA1 to SA2? (see screenshots)

Thank you for the screenshots, Charles.
She does not even have either of these. She sees no folders whatsoever. If you click on the Hide Folders, she has what you would have. If you click on Browse Folders, the folders do NOT come up. All it does is put the documents information in single-line format. She is not home right now, but I will see if she can take her laptop somewhere to make a screenshot of what she does have. I can remote access it through TeamViewer, but don't know if I can capture screenshot of it with that. I will try. She doesn't know how to make a screenshot and save it. |

Here is a screenshot of it where the folders should be.
And this one is with the folders hidden. It is normal. |

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this, other than upgrading to 2013. It is hard for her to learn any new software because of her age. She does quite well with 2010. I am tempted to take my copy of 2010 with me and put it on her machine when I go there this month to see if it does the same thing. I have upgraded to 2013.
Thank you! |

She should put her mouse pointer on the bottom border of the SaveAs dialog box until it becomes a two-pointed up-down arrow. Click and drag it down to expand the box.
That will expand it into a top and bottom with the top showing folders. She can then do the same thing with the mouse in the center of the dialog box and drag the center bar down to expand the folder area more. |

BTW, I had never, in 20 years, seen it displayed the way you show. Most personal users do not use that properties area and keep it minimized, I suspect.

Charles, you are a genius!
I tried the first solution, expanded the box all the way to the bottom of the screen, and all it did was make it bigger with no folders. Then I did the second part of your solution, dragging the center bar down, and that worked! I pulled it all the way down, as far as it would go. LOL Thank you so much for taking the time to figure this out for me. My mother really stretches my brain with the problems she comes up with. She does something, doesn't know what she did, and has me try to figure it out. LOL Thank you again! |

You are welcome. It is weird that Word does this to us. It may be that the developers all work with huge monitors and never resize.

This still works!
This still happens and the suggested solution by Charles Kenyon still works.
Windows 7 and MS Office 2010. Thank you, Charles, for helping and thank you, EweWho, for asking the question, so I could find the solution! :-) |

Still works and still appreciated!
Just thought I'd chime in with an extra graphic to help out.

Thank you, thank you, thank you
We've been dealing with this issue on occasion since June of 2013 and we could never find a fix. Thank you Charles for your information; we've all been sitting around my computer this morning reveling in the fix...how in the world these users managed to hide those folders in the "Save As" window is still beyond us, but at least we now have the fix in hand. Again, much thanks.
