Again, Word creates its own bookmarks that are "hidden." They are included in the limit.

A bookmark is an individual mark. How about something more generic like a character style (which need not look any different from surrounding text). You could add shading to that style so that they could be seen. Then remove the shading to hide your marking if you want. Word's find can locate style instances.
