I concur that use of styles would be wise. Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word
The buttons on the Home tab are rough direct formatting. If you want to fine-tune it, use the dialog launcher in the paragraph group to get to the paragraph formatting dialog. The dialog launcher is the little arrow in the right bottom corner of the paragraph group.
