To kill off any existing hyperlinks, select them and press Ctrl-Shift-F9. To prevent their creation, go to File|Options|Proofing>AutoCorrect Options>AutoFormat As You Type, then uncheck the 'Internet and network paths with hyperlinks' option.

Macropod.

The control-shift-F9 didn't seem to work for me in Word 365, but turning off hyperlinks in AutoFormat did and that is quite sufficient. Many, many thanks. It was driving me crazy.
