After some Googling and fiddling I have established a 'work-around' for this issue. In Mac, Press and hold Control and Command then press space bar; this brings up an Apple Mac set of characters. Pretty well everything is here. Greek characters, not immediately visible, can be found by typing 'Greek' into the search box. Nevertheless, I still feel that MS could improve the 'special character' interface in Word for Mac. Peter Maggs
