For one particular application (patents) I need to number on the left side the lines from 5, 20, 25, 20 etc.
The regular text then runs against this on the right. How can I do this automatically in word? |

Choose the most suitable line numbering option! See under Layout>Line Numbers.

Next to the 'Home' tab on the Word Ribbon is the 'Layout' tab. Click on that and you'll find the 'Line Numbers' dropdown in the 'Text Layout' group.
