If you look at the red box this style has a light blue background, but there is a 10% gray around the font - see green box. I can't find where this is defined. None of the "Modify" options show background fills for the characters.

on that same Modify Style screen, try going Format > Border. The resulting dialog box controls both borders and shading. You'll see the Patterns controls on the Shading tab.

I've been there. It's faint, but the shading is the light blue that you see in the fill for the box. The gray seems to be the fill background of the font only.
