In Word 2013 I have two columns that automatically distribute themselves evenly, i.e. so that they are the same length. I'd like my writing to just continue down to the bottom of the page, then start on the second column.

Make sure that you do not have a section break at the end of your columns. If you selected text and told Word you wanted it in columns, it would create one or more section breaks.
