I'm sorry if this has been addressed already, but I couldn't find it. I set up navigation pane with headings for titles. That's all I want in the pane, but some of the narrative is showing up for some chapters I've pasted in from other documents. Is there a way to adjust this without messing up the content showing there. Thanks for any help! I'm resisting using Scrivener, because I love Word!

The navigation pane shows certain styles.
Go to the ones that are showing up that you do not want in the nav pane and change the style to normal or body text.

You can create a style to match the current formatting without it having a numbering level if you want.

Thanks so much for responding, Charles. I tried doing some of that, but I am such a novice at this I quickly became lost. I don't use Word for anything except writing books, and have so little experience with it. I tried changing style to custom heading 1 but still get the random text in the pasted chapters. It's only the pasted chapters. It's not hurting anything, except my fragile ego that I can't figure it out! But, thanks for the reference. Maybe one day when my head isn't ready to explode it will make sense to me.

Double Clicking on a heading in the Navigation Pane toggles between collapsing the other headings under that heading or displaying it.

Thank you both so much for responses! I solved the problem last night. I'm still not sure exactly how, but the problem was related to extra paragraph spacing that wasn't corrected in a cut, paste and select all reformat. It's great to know people with more experience are here to help! I love having the constant updates via monthly subscription, but between a new and newer version of Word, I'm still climbing uphill.
