Default Table - Allow Spellcheck and tick boxes in certain areas only

I have a Word table that I have areas where I want the user to be able to type, other areas where I want them to put a tick mark in a box and other areas where they can't change text. I have put Protection in the document. When they are in the "Comments" section where I want them to put text, Spell Check doesn't work. I'm looking for some help on how I can accomplish all three things in my document -- please and thank you!
