Page numbers
I've been using MS word for over 20 years (at least it seems like that), but it seems I've forgotten how to do something related to Page numbering.
I know that I used to be able to insert numbers in Headers/Footers but then do something so that I could move the page number anywhere on the page and delete the headers and footers so that I didn't change the text that was on the page. In effect I was printing in the the margins I suppose. I don't seem to be able to do that now. Any help would be welcome. Pete |

Alt+Shift+P inserts a page number anywhere in document at the insertion point. If you are in a header or footer, it will insert it there.
You can also use Insert > Page Number > Current Position to use the Building Block page numbers. Page Numbers in Word 2007-2013 See also Page X of Y Building Blocks. |

Page numbers
Hi, thanks for your reply and have tried Alt + Shift + P and "Current Position" but in both cases it only puts the number on one page. I used to be able to do something which put some sort of frame around the Page Number and then move it anywhere I wanted by dragging it.

Hey, this worked for me! Thank you so much. I wanted to have my header centered with the page number on the outside of the page -- and I can!

If you want the page # to appear on all pages, you need to insert the field into the page header or footer. And, if you have a 'different first page' and/or 'different odd and even' page layout, you'll need to do that for the 'first page' and/or 'odd page' headers/footers as well.

Yes, it's possible. Simply use a 'different first page' layout, combined with a Section break before page 4. Disconnect the second section's header or footer (depending on which you're using for the page #s) from the first section's header or footer, so the page #s don't have to continue, then set the second section's header or footer starting page # to 2. You may or may not want to have a 'different first page' layout for the second section.
