Alt+Shift+P inserts a page number anywhere in document at the insertion point. If you are in a header or footer, it will insert it there.

You can also use Insert > Page Number > Current Position to use the Building Block page numbers.

Default Page numbers

Hi, thanks for your reply and have tried Alt + Shift + P and "Current Position" but in both cases it only puts the number on one page. I used to be able to do something which put some sort of frame around the Page Number and then move it anywhere I wanted by dragging it.

If you want the page # to appear on all pages, you need to insert the field into the page header or footer. And, if you have a 'different first page' and/or 'different odd and even' page layout, you'll need to do that for the 'first page' and/or 'odd page' headers/footers as well.

If my first page no. 1, and i want to keep next 2 pages out of putting page number and after than again to put the page number 2, ie: total pages is 4 but put page numbers only 1 & 2 (first and fourth), is it possible?

Either of the margin accent bars will put a page number in a frame. You can delete everything but the page number if you wish.
