Default Multilevel lists - Numbered headings not following (2010-2016)

Hello,

I've done a quick search on the forum but I'm still confused and hoping someone can explain to me in laymen's terms.

I've created my multilevel list (I followed Lynda's creating long docs word 2013) however when I type the first numbered heading and press enter expecting to be number 2, it just reverts to normal style and the only way to get the second heading is to click the list each time.

Is there an easier way to go about this?
