The hyphens you're referring to are merely non-breaking ones, created via Ctrl+Shift+-, for which Word uses ASCII 30. Strictly speaking, ASCII 30 is a Record separator, not a true hyphen or minus sign, so it doesn't get converted to an ordinary hyphen when pasted into NotePad.
