This should be simple -- but I must be missing something...I've numbered documents before...
For example, create a 4 page word document. I want Page 3 to be the first page of numbering. I insert a section break (next page) at the end of page 2. I insert page numbers on page 3 (now section 2), making sure that "continue from previous section" is unchecked. Word numbers the 4 page document 1-2-1-2. I don't want the first two pages (section 1) numbered! If I delete the numbers in section 1, the numbers in section 2 also disappear. What am I missing??? Here is a link that should help you: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm
I have attached an example of what you are asking for (page numbering starting on page 3 of a 4 page file). |

Thanks -- I had found that link and tried it -- no luck.
I'm a very experienced user and feel really stupid... |

I just attached an example to my orig post. Hopefully, that will help you. Just make sure you have your section break in place and insert the page numbering in position desired with no linking to previous.

Thanks! I see your document perfectly. I look at the "insert page number" dialog and see the "continue from previous section" unchecked. I have the exact dialog choices in my sample document -- and it numbers BOTH sections!
My outline view looks just like yours -- section break after the 2nd page. I'd send you my test file, but I don't see how to attach here! How did you attach to your previous message? |

Attach it via the paper clip using the "Go Advanced" option below (not the Post Quick Reply).
Did you want your file to begin numbering on page 3 with "3"? If so, remember that you have to specify that in the dialog menu. |

Sorry -- should have seen the advanced tab -- here's my file -- note 2 sections and both have page numbers 1-2.
I know how to renumber and eliminate first page numbers -- but thanks for pointing that out. I must be doing (not doing) something simple -- like I said -- I feel like a total idiot! |

Okay, you had page 3 linked to the previous section. I deleted the first two page numbers and removed the link and it is as you wanted (as attached).

I made an assumption that you were familiar with the Link to Previous option but, just in case you are not...I am attaching a screenshot of the Header/Footer ribbon where it appears.

I think I got it -- I never noticed ANOTHER header/footer tab in Word for Mac and finally found where the sections were linked.
Thanks for all the help -- sorry I took so much time to find what should have been obvious (although "obvious" and Microsoft don't often go together...) |
