I am writing diploma work for school. Want to set up automatic numbering for resources and pictures, when I am referring them in the text. So later after I add stuff in the middle, they will automatically increment. Otherwise I have to do it manually after the added material.

That's exactly the behavior you get when you use References > Insert Caption to add captions to figures & tables, and References > Cross-reference to reference them.
