I have a large 390 page document that employs footnotes. I originally converted endnotes to footnotes for preference purposes. Everything appears fine with the exception that, in the footnotes at the bottom, the note immediately follows the footnote number with no space between the two (ex. "1Calvin, Jeremiah, 2:380".). I have been trying to figure out a way to apply a space between every footnote number and the respective footnote without the obvious but tedious answer of manually editing each and every instance.
I have tried modifying the style for the footnotes but every attempt just adds additional numbers with a space in front of the already existing footnote number, immediately followed by the text (ex. "1 1Calvin, Jeremiah, 2:380"). No doubt there is a way to do a batch formatting of the footnotes to accomplish this, I just need the proper direction in how to do it. Thanks! |

Click anywhere within the footnote range then do a Find/Replace, where:
Find = the 'Footnote Reference' Style Replace = ^&^32 or ^&^t (to insert a tab)

In which case, it seems you have more than just the lack of spaces to worry about. Word's footnote references are always inserted using the 'Footnote Reference' Style. The 0 results suggests they've been reformatted with a different Style. Are the footnote references superscripted - which is how Word normally formats them via the 'Footnote Reference' Style?

I changed the Style to a custom name (the finding of that name also returns 0 results). When I change to other styles, the number - which are superscripted - remain adjacent to the footnote text, or they add a reiteration of the number before the existing one.

I have no idea what's going on with your document. The F/R code I gave you won't duplicate the references and it will process whatever matches the Style supplied.
Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

Sorry for delay. Yes, it is strange. I am having the author check to see if the way it is now is unacceptable. If he needs it changed I will upload a portion of the doc.
Thanks! |
