Default Unable to save spell check changes

I got a new PC yesterday (Win10) and am giving Word 2016 a try. One maddening thing I've discovered is that when spell checking a very long document, it doesn't seem to retain the changes I've made, so that after I close the document and then re-open it, the same words and errors are once again, highlighted. Even when I add to the word to the dictionary, it still pops up after I've saved an re-opened the doc.

I'm sure this is an easy fix that I'm oblivious to. Any help will be appreciated.
