The fact you're having trouble with two different versions of Adobe Acrobat Pro, one of which I use extensively with the same Word version as you, suggests your Office installation needs repairing. If you're unwilling to do that (and it's a common-place fix for many niggling Office problems), that's up to you - but don't expect things to fix themselves.

Just a thought – what fonts are you using? in other applications, I've occasionally run into fonts that display correctly on screen but are not licensed for use in a .pdf. If Acrobat then substitutes a near-match, strange things may happen.

The missing characters are in Times New Roman - a fairly common font, I'd think...
