Default Page Number Formatting Question

Hello All

I am trying to do something very simple. I have a long document, and I want the page numbering to start on the fifth page of the document. Importantly, I do not want any pages previous to this page to be numbered at all. So, four un-numbered pages, and then Page 1 on the outside footer of the fifth document.

Watching various YouTube videos I have managed to get Page 1 on the fifth page of the document, but with the previous four pages numbered 1 - 4. I have managed to get exactly what I want with the first 4 pages un-numbered and the fifth page as Page 1, but only when the page numbered are centered and I want them on the outside.

I have Word 2003 and Word 2010 on two different computers and neither has worked so far.

Any help most gratefully received.

R

Delete the page number on the fifth page, then re-insert the field manually, via Ctrl-F9 to create the field braces (i.e. { }) then typing PAGE between them, so you get {PAGE}, then select the field and press F9 to update. Finally, change the paragraph alignment to whatever you want (presumably, right).

See Numbering Front Matter (Ribbon) and How to set up a document with front matter numbered separately

Change the same as previous/link to previous setting in the footer(s) where you want the page numbers so they are not linked to the previous footer(s).

Many thanks for your responses - it's greatly appreciated. Between your advice and some more researching about I have managed to get it done, so thanks again!
