A paragraph style will not change such things unless the aberrant formatting is more than half the paragraph. To apply this style, click in the paragraph without selecting any text.

You're absolutely right. I was forcing a paste to match destination style, which stripped everything out of what I needed it to keep, but pasting and then apply the paragraph style (even highlighting the paragraphs) does what I wanted it to do.
