Hi... I am having to merge one document into another. The one that everything is going into has a bunch of styles from a template (that I created).
When I copied and pasted the smaller document into the big one, the styles all effed up. I was able to easily fix them. HOWEVER... Now I need to make a table of contents (only relevant to the the smaller document), but I'm running into an issue with Styles: When I update Style "FHWA Chapter Heading" to what I need it to (the items I fixed after I pasted), it also updates the other 60 instances of "Protocol Title"-- 2 different styles, yet if I do "Select all instances of FHWA Chapter Heading" it also selects the items with the "Protocol Title" style. They're both just based off Normal, so I don't know how to fix it without having to go back through a 250+ page document do things manually ![]() I leave for vacation at COB today (4 hours from now), and I wanted to have this document ready before I left! Thanks!! Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 08-19-2015 at 05:24 AM. Reason: Mark as solved |

Good luck.
One of these styles must be based on the other for this to happen. Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word What happens if you try selecting all instances of the Protocol style and change it to some other style? |

They aren't based on each other. Somehow, when I pasted the one document, it overwrote a couple of the other styles. So I guess that's what happened. It was only about 12 pages of actual text, so I just went back to a version before I put it in and pasted chunks of text as plain text and made new styles so I could do my TOC. It worked. Once I figured out what had happened, I just figured out the work-around.
