Default hyperlinks in word to pdf files suddenly crash browsers

two questions. first: hyperlinks in pdf files i export from word suddenly are crashing browsers, ie and firefox? recently upgraded from office 2007 to 2013 hoping for relief from question two: my word file containing a large table (13,000 entries and citations) has slowed to an absolute crawl. i use a $4k (2012 dollars) gaming machine that was state of the art when i bought it. at times, every entry i make is after a several second delay and the damn thing is repaginating (25-30 seconds) continually even when i have made no inputs affecting formatting. i understand the incredible amount of numbers this thing is crunching but i want to think the word file has somehow become bloated. are there some auditing or other processes that need to be periodically performed on large files to "clean 'em up?" and what might be going on with this incessant--and for large files (painfully lengthy)--repaginating?

thanks
