Default Selecting 'Save As' has no effect on document

Am producing a long document for a college course where I have had difficulty with saving and continuing on. I have renamed the document, have had to retype information, and several times was given the warning 'locked for editing'. How do I solve this situation?

Save As is intended to save a document in its current state under a new name. You may want to look at Graham Mayor's versioning Add-In.
