Can I alter the line spacing when inserting a different font and character size into a paragraph? As in this example.

Word doesn't let you specify line spacing as a character property (which I believe InDesign does). However, what you can do is set fixed line spacing for the paragraph. In Word for Windows, you'll find these settings in the Paragraph dialog box.
