I have a document in which there is title, Header 1, Header 2 and Normal text. However, whenever I try to generate a table of contents, the Normal text is included in the table of contents so that it basically becomes a reformatted repeat of the whole document. That is, of course, not what I have in mind, but I don't understand why it's happening and don't know how to prevent it. I know the text is formatted "Normal", because if I put the cursor within it, then the Normal style is highlighted at the top of the page. Does anyone know why this would happen and how to prevent it?
Thank you very much! Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 06-10-2015 at 03:08 PM. Reason: Mark as solved |

Based on your question I am assuming you are relatively new to using MS Word. Here are some links that will help you:

Apparently, somehow your normal style has been given an outline level. See the pages linked previously. You would want to modify that style so that it is set to the body text level.

Thank you very much! I was confused because no "Outline" category was showing as selected for the text that was showing up in the TOC. However, re-designating the text as Normal did fix the issue.

Also, note that you may want to clear the \u switch from the table of contents field code. Doing that prevents Word from including in the TOC text that has acquired an "Outline level" other than "Body Text"; styles with an "Outline level" (such as the built-in headings) will still be picked up, as expected.
