First, I would never work on a machine that did not display these "filename extensions."

But, I'm not you.

This is a Windows View setting. Open any Windows folder and change the view options to not show file name extensions. That is the default setting for Windows.
Attached is a screen shot from a Windows 8.1 computer. It may differ with different operating systems and may include the words "known file types."
