Find and Replace - symbols

I have chosen to assign key "Ctrl+ D" to the degrees symbol.
When I type this combination in a word document, all is fine as the symbol appears correctly.

However, when I try to paste "Ctrl+D" in either Find or Replace, nothing appears in the "find what" or "replace with" box.
Can anyone suggest what is wrong please
