Can't open a document

Hi,
I am using MSOffice 97. I can not open a word document that I have used for years. When I try I get a message saying to make sure I have a .doc after the file name. I do but it won’t open. I need to open this because it contains critical information. How can I open this file. My help menu has disappeared so I need help online.
