Assuming that you are using Word's line numbering feature, you can modify the Line Number style. In the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S), type Line Number and then click the Modify button. Change the desired aspects of the formatting.
If you want to add the modified style to the attached template, select the "New documents based on this template" radio button before clicking OK in the Modify Style dialog box.

Is this feature documented anywhere in Help? Searching Help for Line Number, Line Numbers, and Line Numbering (that's three searches, not one long search string) produces several entries, but none with headings that hint line numbering will be described within the topic.
