Hi guys,
I'm just trying to write up my thesis with word 2010. So i have 6 chapters and i'm using Heading 1 for the main Chapter Headings. What i wanna do is to hide the numberings in front of this Headings. As you can imagine i have plenty of sections too. So from Chapter 1 to Chapter 3 there is no sections and all the Headings are looking good with hidden numbering. In Chapter 3 i've started to create sections. Now i'm in Chapter 4 and there is a Strikethrough on my hidden heading numbering and right next to it there is unhidden one. So it shows the numbering and doesn't allow me to hide. So Chapter 4, 5 and 6 Heading Numberings are all same. I guess it's related to section breaks since i recently got over my issues with headers&footers. It would be really great if somebody can help me with this. Cheers |

What you need to do is to edit the document's multi-level list numbering setup, so Heading 1 is un-numbered. See attached.
The important thing in implementing such an arrangement is to first select one of your chapter headings, then work through the multi-level list numbering setup for all applicable levels while that chapter heading is selected.

You can't have it both ways - either you have a number for the Chapter or you don't. Do note that having a number for the Chapter doesn't mean that number also has to appear in the other headings. See attached.

Thanks Paul,
What i was trying to do was " Chapter 1 The title of the Chapter" So instead of hiding or not using the heading numbers, basically i added the text "Chapter" in front of the heading numbers in the multilevel list and used shift+enter to take the title underneath. It also allowed me to use the captions as well. Thanks for the help. |
