If you follow Stefan's suggestion (which may be easier) you will need two cross-references, one to the number and one to, the text, separated by a space. There is no way to delete a manually inserted tab with a single cross-reference that includes the number + tab + text.

Of course, I should have mentioned that it will be necessary with one cross-reference for the number and another for the text.
