Default How to hide paragraph formatting on screen

While typing several pages of text, I must have inadvertently hit some keys, because paragraph formatting signs popped up on the screen. I remember in an earlier version of Word (I'm presently using Office 2010) that one could hit something like a Control key and then a function key (e.g., F10) to remove the formatting. Nothing that I have tried has worked, however.

Could someone clue me in on the appropriate keys to hit to remove the formatting from the screen?

Thanks in advance.
