This drives me nuts. In the image below you can see I have highlighted the bulleted list. Notice the roman numerals are the first level. But also notice that suddenly, for NO reason at all, word decided to add a bunch of space after the III. WHY???
How to delete the huge amount of space after the III so it lines up with the I and II? Thanks ![]() |

This would be because the space between the actual roman numeral and the hanging indent where the line of text begins is too close for the III. so it moves the text across so that the III. and the word are not overlapping.
To fix this I would suggest you either: 1) Select the numbered style, go to Format > Bullets and Numbering 2) Click Customise 3) Change the Number Position to Right and click OK 4) If this doesn't help go back into Format > Bullets and Numbering > Customise 5) Increase the setting for Text position for Tab space after and Indent at 6) Increase the setting by 0.2-0.4 cm and then press OK 7) Your numbered list should be aligned now Let me know how you go. |

Thanks, that did help. I changed the hanging indent of each I, II, III one at a time until it looked o.k. Not ideal, but good enough.
Do you know of any online training or class that covers this kind of thing? Even a well linked dictionary might help. Because whoever wrote word uses terminology that is so strange I don't even know how to look for what might be the problem when I have a problem in word. For example the problem I was having above. If I search the MS-word help, I would search for: space after numbering tabs after numbering space between bullets and text But find nothing. It would NEVER occur to me to search for: hanging indent What does that even mean? What is hanging about it? I need google to be able to intelligently search the MS word help. |

Hi Matt,
I do not yet have any posts on my blog about numbering but am certainly happy to write something and post it this week if that would help you and I can write it specifically about the problem you have just experienced. Let me know if you would like me to do so and I can put it together during the week and publish it for you. My blog site is only 5 months old so I'm building the content but as JimP has linked there are other sites around also. My posts relating to Word can be found at http://www.thetraininglady.com/microsoft-word/ Link to my blog is in my signature plus I'm also on Facebook. |
