Split pilcrow or paragraph symbol

Sometimes in a Word document I see a split pilcrow or paragraph symbol. The split occurs in the top half of the symbol. Can someone tell me what this means?

It's probably either a display artefact, caused by your system's display driver, or just the way the font you're using displays them.

Thanks. They show up randomly . . . but I have never been able to determine what their purpose was.
