Hi to all,
strange things happen …. I customized my Word 2010 ribbon quite a while a ago, inserting a "Me" tab and adding all frequently used controls (commands) and macros to one tab (character, paragraph, table, … I did this via "File > Options > … ", I did not edit the OfficeUI manually. I sometimes changed the order of the controls, edited or deleted the display text … no probs at all … … until a few days ago: I deleted some controls and added some other. So far nothing new, but … … now the strange and unfortunately not changeable behavior: The order of some controls within two groups changes whenever I (re)open Word. The groups and the controls affected are always the same, the (falsely) rearranged order of the controls also is the same. When opening the OfficeUI in XML Notepad (Word closed) the controls are listed in exactly the order I arranged them. Opening Word with the OfficeUI file still open in XML Notepad results in (falsely) rearranged controls in the "Me" tab again. So I definitely have two versions: the right version of the in the OfficeUI in XML Notepad and the obviously changed version in the Word ribbon. XML Notepad does not inform about any changes to the file on the hard disk. Whenever – for testing purpose – I change some e.g. control display text XML Notepad recognizes these changes and asks me if I want to reload the changed file. I can close Word, close XML Notepad, open Word, open XML Notepad (OffceUI) in random order, nothing changes: OffceUI in XML Notepad displays the controls in exactly the order I added them. Word has 'its own (other) order' completely disregarding the sequence shown in XML Notepad. Maybe two facts to add:
So my question: what's going on there. Of course I do not want Word to change the order of the controls … ![]() ![]() ![]() Any ideas ??? Help really appreciated ![]() NP |

First, modification of the QAT is simpler if you are doing it within the UI. Modifying the QAT and Ribbon in Microsoft Word.
I'm afraid I abandoned Ribbon Customization within the UI sometime ago because manual customization gives so much more flexibility. I do my editing using the Custom UI Editor. Using that, I've never experienced the problem you are seeing. Doing the editing with the UI, the controls are shown in order in the Interface and you are able to move them up and down (right and left on the ribbon). Are you not seeing this or is it not keeping that order? What I am reading in your question is that both the order on the ribbon and the order in the ribbon modification dialog is changing. Are you perhaps changing the order using the XML Notepad directly? |

Sorry, I can't think of what is happening. Someone else here may be able to help.
My ribbon modifications for the past three years or so have all been by manual modification of the XML using the Office UI editor. If you are doing extensive modification, especially for more than one computer, I would urge you to tackle it. Customize the Ribbon (It doesn't take rocket science) Such modifications are more powerful, more flexible, and more robust. Among other things, the same modifications work for me in Word 2007, Word 2010, and Word 2013. That is not the case with modifications made through the UI. |
